Delicious Pumpkin Pie

Every season has its popular food and drinks. There’s hot chocolate during winter, fresh spring veggies during the spring, barbeque for summer, and of course, pumpkin pie in fall.

You will know a new season is here with the abundance of these seasonal food items in our retirement community. This fall, for example, is all about anything that is pumpkin flavored. Our residents in Oakville, ON thoroughly enjoy pumpkin pies and other pumpkin-spiced treats.

Oakville Retirement Home Fall Foods

Here at our Oakville retirement residence, we enjoy a lot of fall food items. We serve a lot of apples, squash, carrots, sweet potato, and many other delicious foods. But have you ever wondered how some fall foods became a staple?

It has a lot to do with the rich supply of those ingredients. Around fall is when those popular food items are harvested. As such, we get to enjoy them when they are most fresh. For example, the pumpkin harvest season is generally between the end of August to the end of October. This means there is a good supply of pumpkins available.

This is also why pumpkin pie became a dessert staple during the fall season. With the abundant supply of pumpkins, people had to think of creative ways to use them. Aside from boiling and roasting, different versions of pumpkin pie were made before it became what we know and love today.

Fun fact: did you know that pumpkin pie didn’t start as an actual pie? In the 1600’s they baked pumpkins with milk, honey, and spices inside a hollowed-out pumpkin shell. It wasn’t until around the 1650s when pumpkin pie with pastry became more popular.
