The Oakville Museum sits at the very space where Oakville began. In 1827, William Chisholm bought 960 acres of land and founded the town of Oakville. The first brick building was built in 1835, known as the Custom House. This later became the Chisholm family home, known as the Erchless Estate. Today, we know it as the Oakville Museum.
This is the best place to start when it comes to learning more about the city. Guided tours are available of the Chisholm family home and the entire estate.
2. Oakville’s First Post Office
This was built in 1835 by William Chisholm, who also served as the first postmaster. The original building was saved from demolition and moved to Lakeside Park. It became Oakville’s first museum.

3. The Thomas House
Built-in 1829, this building is furnished and presented as a pioneer home of the 1830s to 1840s. Many of the home’s original family items are still on display. It is a great way to learn about life in the early 1800s.
4. Old Oakville Heritage Conservation District
Get to know Oakville’s first designated district and one of the first in the whole of Ontario. It extends from Robinson’s Street to Sixteen Mile Creek, all the way to Allen Street.
The entire district is made up of 162 homes, cottages, luxury houses, and churches. Here is where you can see the diverse architectural styles of that period.
