Beautiful Architecture Around Retirement Homes Near You

A great way to learn more about a city is through its architecture. Different structures and buildings can say a lot about the community’s culture and overall atmosphere.

Luckily, there isn’t a shortage of architecture to discover around retirement communities in Pickering. Here are some of them.

1. Former Pickering Town Hall

This is a prominent structure as it is one of the oldest buildings in the city. It is a one-storey wood frame structure perched on a stone foundation. It has a gable roof, a symmetrical façade, and large paned windows.

It’s a great example of early rural municipal halls. The well-executed details, fine proportions, and interior finishes say a lot about the style and sophistication of the building.

2. Former Mount Pleasant School House

Built in 1858, this is one of the first publicly funded educational institutions in the Pickering Township. It’s a simple one-storey, rectangular red brick building. It has a wood-frame shed on its façade, a low gable roof, and a small arched belltower.

This is the perfect example of an adaptable, functional design. It was originally a one-room schoolhouse which later was divided into several rooms to serve as a residence. It also shows the use of plain, solid brickwork seen in the Pickering Township.

3. Pickering Museum Village

This is more of a collection of structures that residents of retirement communities in Pickering can explore. The Pickering Museum Village is home to 19 heritage buildings that were built from 1810-1920.

Here you’ll find a general store, blacksmith, chapel, and more. Each building has been preserved to reflect the type of architecture and culture of its time.

4. Black’s Service Station

Established in the 1900s, Black’s Service Station was in business for 57 years. It offered gasoline-related products, tires, and even refreshments.

It’s a one-storey wooden structure that reflects the simple and rural design of that time. It was built as the first service station in Pickering, with living quarters created above. Today, it is a Petro-Canada.
